He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As disorienting as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, however it is still disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

Christ's response to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The obvious and straightforward reality that the Savior in biblical accounts calls for a kind of profound affection centered on the poor is what has always made Christianity something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Best of Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to see the persistent defiance against Trump develop in this past year.
