The artist has given the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to save the United Kingdom's small live music spots.

The star was awarded the prize on mid-October as his latest record his work was named the outstanding release of the previous year.

He has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the vital role small stages played in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the shows I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," remarked the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these locations have ceased operations – roughly one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, well-known musicians like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its initiatives to support the industry, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also joined in, raising over £100k on his recent tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported venues that were facing potential shutdown due to issues stemming from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, court cases and noise complaints.

Additional spaces obtained monetary aid in improving amenities and gear that positively impacted performers and audiences.

"The concept that funds from shows in major spaces helps the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just sensible," Fender has commented.

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize funds to worthy causes.

Back when they earned the prize in the mid-90s for their album Different Class, vocalist the singer stated that the group would donate their cash to the charity War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite split her bounty among multiple charities, like the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I donated a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to the media.

Two years ago, they gave their funds to the community center that supported their act, as well as other independent music bodies.

Also 1994 winners the group gave their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was identified with the condition.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," stated singer Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected somebody else's life."

Recently, the MVT shared it had saved a couple of local spots in the South East, by bringing them into community ownership.

The first in the city and The Croft in Bristol were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is funded by the arts council and music fans who purchase "stakes" in the buildings.
