Manchester City Three Goals to Nil The Red Devils: Lauren Hemp scores in City dominant win.

Similar to the recent storm hit the north-west the prior day, Manchester City overwhelmed United away at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 victory for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for Manchester United

This outcome represented successive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the top team with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's capability to juggle league and continental soccer with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the European competition. Reviewing the schedule, it always seemed this was the week that would seriously challenge this ability. Regrettably for the opposition, they appeared weary all game, the landmark win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had sought to make changes with a handful of alterations. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all brought energy, although the omission of the on-form Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

The hosts, in comparison, have no such loading concerns. Jeglertz made one change from last week’s win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to build for Skinner and his team from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the quality from Manchester City whose energetic attack controlled and dismantled the opposition with a sublime opening period display that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.

This left the home team in a commanding position and saw the visitors all at sea. Prior to this match, United had allowed just six in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the wake of City’s attacking flair.

Opening Threats

The omens came early when Miedema used her physicality to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot past the post. Hemp was at the core of everything early on, using the gap left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right flank. Her deliveries were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple attacks forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them choices in the flanks but they could not test Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, in the meantime, dominated possession, taunting their opposition and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A delivery to the far post was headed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the term.

They extended their advantage with an additional two goals just before the break. When Rose was permitted to advance through the middle from defense, the pitch became spacious for City. The prominent Kerstin Casparij received possession on the wing before delivering a precise ground pass for Shaw to force home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a swift change in the ball saw Hemp given the space to fire a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The most obvious change came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the match. Former Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the post, but the away team were lacking in ideas and failed to record a solitary shot on target.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have extended their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Having failed to overcome any team who ended above them the previous campaign, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to put them in a favorable situation after the opening fixtures.
