A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

One account, which became a member recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the morning of the next day, pointing to a sudden change in positions just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other platform users also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on Monday would prevent public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.

Prediction markets were examined under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
